You don't need any other software from OpenPrinting, Gutenprint, or Xerox. Put the ppd file in the /Library/Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources/ directory at the root of your hard drive. Your best choice is to download the ppd for your printer from the OpenPrinting site. I would be interested in knowing if there is any lost functionality with the PPD from OpenPrinting/Xerox vs the last Xerox OS X driver. The features can be written into the PPD. For PostScript printers, I believe most of the PDEs are superfluous. They generally make use of extra filters and PDEs (printer dialog extensions).

The reason that the single PPD from OpenPrinting works while the Xerox drivers produced for OS X don't has to do with how most manufacturers construct their OS X drivers. I have not seen anything to say what level of security would be in place after relaxing the sandboxing rules. You said that they ceased to work in OS X 10.7. I am not sure that would make Xerox's OS X drivers for your printer work. Eric recommended relaxing the sandboxing for the printing system. There is most certainly an increase in security in just about every aspect of Yosemite compared to previous versions of OS X. Was it the correct usage of the acronym? Was it the same as today's usage on OS X?ģ. I don't know what PC Magazine meant when using IPP in the article. Consider that Mac System 9 used IP printing for your Xerox printer. Often times IPP is used interchangeably with IP printing. You may want to read Wikipedia's entry for IPP for some of the complexities involved.Ģ. Think about problems of backward compatibility. In addition, the specifications for IPP have changed from version 1.0 around 1996 to today's version 2.1. Not all implementations of IPP are created equal. The article that you cite in PC Magazine is from March, 2003 and written from a Windows perspective for a Windows audience. I will share with you my thoughts and opinions.ġ.
I am not sure if I can give you any authoritative answers. Is the Printer itself just not compatible with any drivers that work natively in Yosemite?
I've just discovered that I can describe it as a Windows Printer in the Printers & Scanners Prefs Panel and print to it so long as my Win 7 virtual machine is running! The printer itself is fine: it prints all its test pages from the Printers internal setup firmware. I assume this is because the two printers are sufficiently different that the drivers aren't compatible.

I tried using a different Xerox (Phaser 4600) driver that driver can communicate with the Printer but times out with an error (red status LED on the printer, after which the printer returns to "ready to print" with Green LED on the printer and no message returned to the Mac. There is one labeled Xerox Phaser 4400N, and it can communicate with the printer (shows the toner cartridge capacity), but I cannot print even the test page from the Mac (the Print window says it's composed 67% of the page, but doesn't ever proceed to print anything. I've tried using the Gutenprint CUPS driver.

I'm not sure whether this began with my update to Yosemite I think I've printed a few things from Yosemite to it, but I'm not certain. It's now more than 10 years old, but suddenly I cannot get it to print from the Mac OS. I have a workhorse Duplex Laser Printer (Xerox Phaser 4400N).
